All Are Welcome at the Library

All Are Welcome at the Library: Resources for Talking to Kids about ICE is a child development–centered guide designed to help caregivers talk with children ages 2–12 about immigration enforcement and ICE activity. When families experience heightened stress — whether directly impacted or simply absorbing news and community concern — children notice. This resource offers developmentally appropriate conversation starters, curated booklists, trusted external resources, and practical support pathways to help adults respond with honesty and care.

I created this guide in response to what I was hearing from families and colleagues across Brooklyn: children asking questions, caregivers unsure how to begin, and staff wanting language that felt both responsible and compassionate. With so much expert information out there already, I believe our role in libraries is to strengthen families with curated information, points of connection, and access to trusted partners. I am deeply grateful to the Brooklyn Public Library Outreach Department for their ongoing work in support of immigrant communities, and for sharing resources and expertise that helped shape this guide.
